Foetal Monitoring in Labour

Dr Kirsten Small is a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist. She works as an educator, writer, researcher, and clinician. Her research focuses on power in maternity services, particularly in relation to foetal heart rate monitoring and electronic health record systems.
Dr Small’s vision is to promote and protect respectful maternity care for women, babies, families, and their care providers through education and research. She firmly believes that the pathways to achieve respectful maternity care are:

  • Promotion of physiological birth
  • Ensuring access to timely, appropriate, proven interventions when pathology arises
  • Supporting women’s decisional capacity
  • The expansion of midwifery continuity of care models of care
