Ectopic Pregnancy A Reappraisal

Ectopic pregnancy is a common emergency in early pregnancy that many gynaecologists see in their practice. Haemorrhage from ectopic pregnancies continues to be the leading cause of pregnancy-related maternal mortality in the first trimester, although fortunately rare. A delay in diagnosis or inappropriate treatment can lead to serious consequences with potential for litigation. Conversely, too early an intervention can result in disruption of a potentially viable undiagnosed intrauterine pregnancy. This CME focuses on the appropriate and timely management of ectopic pregnancies (both tubal and non- tubal), with a special emphasis on medico legal implications and the lessons learnt from challenging real-life cases.
