Consultant Midwife, Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust

PHYSIOLOGICAL BREECH BIRTHS

Kate is a Consultant Midwife at the Surrey and Sussex NHS Trust. She has extensive experience in education, training, clinical practice, midwifery-led care and public health initiatives both in the UK and internationally, including India, Sri Lanka and Somaliland. She provides clinical support and training to organisations globally to support the development of midwifery practice, human rights and respectful maternity care and vaginal breech birth.
As part of her portfolio of responsibilities, she holds a number of external teaching and research positions, including implementation lead and clinical training for the Breech Birth Network,  PI OptiBreech UK Vaginal Breech Research Trial, RCOG Breech Birth workshop (co-lead), BirthRights UK, Guest Faculty at Fernandez Foundation and a number of UK universities.

Masterclass Overview:

This comprehensive course has been designed to increase your knowledge in the management of women in labour with a breech-presenting fetus.

The programme includes an immersive blend of lectures, case studies, videos, peer discussion and hands-on practice. You will leave feeling significantly more confident in supporting these births to have the safest possible outcomes.

To further your learning experience and ensure you can review any of the material, you will have access to the online version of the course for one year, through the Breech Birth Network. This includes access to an extensive video library, with permission to use the resources for teaching purposes within your own setting.

In NHS-based evaluations, this course has been shown to increase clinician confidence and knowledge. It is also the only vaginal breech birth skills course associated with positive post-training outcome data.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this course, delegates attending will be able to:

  • Discuss with each other and women the evidence to support the management of breech presentation at term, as summarised in RCOG guidelines (2017)
  • Identify the characteristics, based upon the current evidence concerning fetal positions, the mechanisms of breech birth and characteristics of breech labours
  • Identify deviations from the standard and their associated risks
  • Clearly communicate with others in the multi-disciplinary team to escalate or lead as appropriate
  • Confidently perform manual interventions to resolve obstruction when the woman is in a supine and an upright position for birth
  • Formulate a plan for your personal development of breech skills, based upon the available evidence about how professionals develop competence and expertise

Additional Perks:

We will share a link to the masterclass at the end of the course.

All attendees can have access to the online programme for one year so that they can re-visit and keep refreshing their knowledge.

We can provide printed copies of the algorithm and proformas or send them as PDF after the event.

Who should attend?

  • Consultants, SAS/Trust doctors and trainees in O&G
  • Midwives
  • Birthing Practitioners
  • Educators and Lecturers
